Early morning flight from Cancun: how to plan your ride out

It is 3 a.m. The highway is empty, the boulevard is empty, there is one person behind the front desk, and your flight leaves in three hours.

An early morning flight from Cancun comes with one advantage and one trap. The advantage: the drive to the airport is the fastest it gets all day. The trap: everything that normally bails you out — a passing taxi, one more bus, hotel breakfast — does not exist at that hour.

The night before, in four decisions

1. Confirm your terminal. It is on your boarding pass. Cancun Airport operates Terminals 2, 3 and 4 — Terminal 1 is closed for construction — and landing at the wrong one before dawn means a walk or an internal shuttle with everything you packed.
2. Close your bags before you sleep. Not for tidiness: the luggage going home is rarely the luggage that came, and finding out at 3 a.m. that it does not fit is the worst possible moment. We cover it in cancellations, delays and luggage.
3. Tell the front desk. Settle the checkout early, ask whether there is breakfast to go, and confirm which door is open at that hour: many lobbies lock the main entrance overnight.
4. Lock in the pickup time and leave it alone. This is the one people regret — moving it twenty minutes earlier "just in case" and then not sleeping. Choose it with the math done, and forget it.

What will not help at that hour

• The ADO bus. The route between the airport and the Hotel Zone has few departures a day; in other areas the schedules do not cover the small hours either. It can work for a midday flight, not a 6 a.m. one.
• The Maya Train. Very few departures a day, all in the morning, with stations outside the town centers. It is not a pre-dawn option.
• Hoping a taxi drives by. Reasonable in daylight; at 3 a.m. outside a hotel it is not a plan, it is a bet. Airport taxis run on their own fares and are taken there, not here — we explain it in taxis at Cancun airport.

Margin, before dawn

An empty highway tempts you to leave later. Two reasons not to: check-in counters open on their schedule, not yours, and your airline's check-in window — theirs, the one on your confirmation — does not shrink because it is dark. The time you save on the road gets spent in line anyway, just sitting down with your boarding pass printed.
